recommended literature
SLAA Recovery involves reading and reflection. As we read other experiences of addiction, we relate and no longer feel alone. As we also read other experiences of recovery, we feel hopeful that we too can find freedom. Reading and reflection on the steps is also a core component of working the steps.
Here is an annotated list of literature. It is recommended that you go 'deep' in the basics, before you venture too 'wide' and read everything under the sun on the topic!
Basic Texts
Step Working Literature
Personal Reflection
Topical Booklets and Pamphlets
The SLAA Fellowship Wide Services (SLAA FWS) webstore (here) has all literature including topical booklets and pamphlets on specific topics. Meetings will have varying selections of physical copies of these booklets and pamphlets. They are also available to purchase from SLAA FWS as digital downloads here.

Basic Texts
- (The SLAA 'Big Book') Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous: The SLAA Basic Text - this is the core of all of our literature. A must have.
- (The AA 'Big Book') Alcoholics Anonymous and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions (A.K.A. the '12x12')
- Page 66 of our basic text says "...we recommend that you also read the books Alcoholics Anonymous (especially chapters 5-7) and Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions. We have found these books... to be surprisingly appropriate and useful to us in applying the Twelve Steps to sex and love addiction. We substitute such words as "our addiction" or "sex and love addiction" for the direct references to alcoholism in those books."
- The AA Big Book can be read online here.
- The 12x12 can also be read online here.
Step Working Literature
- The Step Questions Workbook - the latest and most comprehensive workbook (A4 format) for working the steps with a sponsor.
- Find and order online here.
- A Guide to the Steps: Companion to Chapter Four of the Basic Text - this booklet (A5 format - light blue) has been helpful for guiding people through the Steps - especially before the publishing of The Step Questions Workbook.
- Find and order online here.
- The Narcotics Anonymous (N.A.) Step Working Guide - this is a very thorough guide that some (from many fellowships outside of N.A.) choose to use as their step working journey.
- Hard copies can be obtained through Amazon, or Book Depository, etc. Some also have found PDF versions freely available online with some searching.
Personal Reflection
- State of Grace - Daily Meditations. A very popular and useful tool for daily recovery meditation, prayer and reflection. Some meetings also use this to provide a basis for sharing.
- (limited copies available in Auckland)
- Find and order online here.
- Older, tried and true tools from AA such as 'One Day at a Time' and 'Twenty-Four Hours a Day' have proven useful as well.
- They are worth searching for online, or in 2nd hand bookstores.
